The importance of governors forum to Nigeria's development..

What is the impact of governors forum to our present day
democracy in Nigeria?

The Nigeria Governors' Forum is aimed to be a policy think tank and coalition of the elected Governors of the country's 36 States. The mission of the Governor’s forum is to provide a common platform for collaboration amongst the Executive Governors on matters of public policy; to promote good governance, sharing of good practice and enhance cooperation at the state level and with other arms of government and society.

If its main aim is properly followed, the Nigerian Governor’s Forum will bring order and good governance to the generality of the people.

  • Thank you for the enlightment. @ Babade.
  • You are welcome, sir.
  • That's correct but where it stands now it is causing more harm (among state governors) than good with its recent factional divisions
  • Govs forum,to me is a shared waste of time and scarce resources. The forum has lost its focus and its existence has contribute nothing meaningful to the development of Nig.Should all the Govs emerge from same political party, you imagine the power and influence that will be bestow on them.
  • Thank you Taiwo and Simplesolar, your points are well noted. The Governors Forum is not new. It has been in existence since 1999 and a number of individuals have chaired the forum in the past without any negative headline.

Between 1999 and 2004, Alhaji (Dr.) Abdullahi Adamu, Former Governor of Nasarawa State chaired the forum; from 2004 to 2006, it was Arc. (Obong) Victor Attah, Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State who headed the forum. From 2006 to 2007, it was Mr. Lucky Igbinedion, Former Governor of Edo State who chaired and Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, Former Governor of Kwara State chaired from 2007 to 2011. Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, Governor of Rivers State became the chairman in 2011 and has been there till date. His recent re-election has been the issue.

There are calls from a number of quarters for the dis-integration of the Forum in the light of the recent happenings in that regard. Without attempting to make a case for the forum, there are a number of achievements that the forum has recorded over the years. One can click on ( to view some of them. Thus, I am of the opinion that the baby should not be thrown away with the bath water.
